Important distinction: Stripe’s global availability page labels South Africa as “Extended network” and links that entry to Paystack. Do not interpret that label as identical to standard direct Stripe onboarding in every supported country. Paystack says its services are available to businesses registered in South Africa, Nigeria, Ghana and Kenya.
Quick comparison for South Africa
| Service | Current source finding | Practical next step |
|---|---|---|
| Stripe / Paystack | Stripe lists South Africa under its extended network and links to Paystack, a Stripe subsidiary focused on African markets. Paystack serves businesses registered in South Africa. | Start with Paystack’s local onboarding, payment-channel and settlement details; do not assume standard Stripe account eligibility. |
| PayPal | PayPal ZA documents withdrawing funds to a bank account or eligible debit card. Feature availability can vary by market. | Check the options displayed in your verified local account, receiving rules, fees and linked-bank requirements. |
| Wise | South Africa is on Wise’s list of countries where customers can hold money. | Check whether the specific personal/business account and feature you need is available. |
| Shopify Payments | South Africa does not appear on Shopify’s current list of supported Shopify Payments online-store countries. | Use Shopify’s country-filtered third-party gateway directory and confirm the provider will onboard your South African business. |
Paystack: a relevant local merchant option
Paystack states that its services are available to businesses registered in South Africa, Ghana, Nigeria and Kenya. Its South African documentation describes card payments and local channels including bank-based methods such as Ozow EFT and Capitec Pay, while developer documentation lists certain QR-payment capabilities for South African businesses. Exact features depend on account approval and configuration.
Paystack’s published South Africa pricing page currently shows separate rates for local and international transactions and a separate transfer charge; because fees change and VAT may apply, check the latest price directly rather than relying on a copied fee table.

PayPal: verify the exact receiving and withdrawal route
PayPal South Africa’s help pages describe a bank-withdrawal workflow and indicate that product/feature availability may differ by market. That matters because receiving, holding, and withdrawing are separate capabilities. Log in to your verified account, check the Wallet/Transfer Money options that are actually offered, and review currency conversion and fees before promising payment terms to a client.

Wise: balance eligibility is a separate question
Wise’s current help page includes South Africa in its list of countries where users can hold money. You should still verify the required personal/business account type, supported currency details, receiving methods, card availability and transfer route. A country being listed for balance holding does not mean every Wise feature is available without restrictions.

Shopify merchants: use the gateway directory
South Africa is not listed among the current supported-country pages for Shopify Payments. Shopify instructs merchants whose country is not listed to use a third-party payment provider. Filter Shopify’s gateway directory by South Africa and then confirm the provider’s own merchant eligibility, supported payment methods, settlement currency, refund/chargeback process and any Shopify transaction fees.

A practical decision checklist
- Local South African checkout: compare Paystack’s local methods against customer preferences and settlement terms.
- International customers: verify which international cards and currencies can be accepted and in which currency payouts settle.
- Receiving client money: compare PayPal and Wise on incoming routes, withdrawal choices, conversion rates and fees.
- Ecommerce: confirm that the provider appears in your store’s live payment settings; an external provider listing alone does not guarantee eligibility for every store.
